Application kits are available from the County Clerk’s Office or on the Michigan State Police website.

Training Certificate Requirements for new applicants effective December 1, 2015 include:

  • Training must be completed within five years preceding the date of application
  • The training certificate must contain the name, signature and telephone number of the course instructor
  • In addition to “This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372,” after December 1, 2015, each certificate shall also contain the name and telephone number of the state agency or a state or national firearms training organization that has certified the individual as an instructor for purposes of this section, his or her instructor certification number, if any, and the expiration date of that certification, which shall be printed on the face of the certificate or attached in a separate document.

New Applicants (filing for the first time) will need the following:

  • Application
  • Original Concealed Pistol License Training Certificate compliant with language requirements effective December 1, 2015
  • Michigan Driver’s License or State I.D. (United States Armed Forces Applicants, please see application or contact County Clerk’s Office)
  • $100.00 application fee
  • Additional $15.00 fee payable to the agency providing the applicant’s Live Scan fingerprinting

An application is considered a RENEWAL, if the applicant has a valid Concealed Pistol License that is within six months of expiration or has not been expired for more than 1 year.  Renewal applicants meeting these criteria will need the following:

  • Application
  • Must certify that he/she has completed at least three hours of review of the required training and have had at least one hour of firing range time in the six months immediately preceding the application
  • $115.00 application fee

CPL renewal applications may be submitted one of three ways: in person, by mail, or online.

  1. To renew in person, you must file your CPL renewal application with the County Clerk in the county in which you reside.
  2. To renew by mail, please send your completed application and check, payable to the “State of Michigan,” to:

*You may experience an additional 2-3 week delay in processing to allow a payment by check to clear your financial institution.

  1. To renew online, visit michigan.gov/cplrenewal. Use the CPL renewal PIN that is located at the bottom of your renewal letter. Online applications may be paid by credit card or e-check.

Applicants with a Concealed Pistol License that is expired for more than one year must apply as a new applicant, including taking the training and being re-fingerprinted.  See the criteria set forth for New Applicants.

The County Clerk shall issue the concealed pistol license or notice of statutory disqualification within 45 days after the date the applicant has classifiable fingerprints taken.  Upon approval, the Concealed Pistol License will be mailed directly to the applicant at the address placed on file at the time of application.
